Professor Monica Shaw
Experience
Professor Shaw is a social scientist with a strong record of successful senior management in Higher Education. At executive level she was responsible for leading the strategic development of a large and diverse faculty for eleven years. Over a period of five years she was also responsible for the cross-University lead on academic quality with very successful outcomes.
Since 1997 Professor Shaw has been contracted as a Quality Auditor for the National Quality Assurance Agency and has participated in a wide range of Higher Education audits both in the UK and overseas. She has provided consultancy for the senior management teams of colleges and universities on their quality systems and governance. In recent years this has focussed on those institutions wishing to achieve degree awarding powers. This work complements her long-standing research interests in organisational behaviour and functioning. She has researched into: white-collar unionisation; nursing relationships in different hospital contexts; equal opportunities in the workplace, and the role of education in providing opportunities. Working with a team of researchers she has recently completed a study of multi-disciplinary relationships in the forensic mental health field and is currently working on a book concerned with risk and health.
Professor Shaw has been involved for many years in the development of voluntary organisations and is currently Chair of the Executive Committee of Newcastle Council for Voluntary Service. She has considerable experience of performance and change management and of designing systems to enhance organisational behaviour. She is Professor Emeritus at the University of Northumbria and is employed on a half-time basis as a Senior Research Fellow at City University, London.
